POLICE are to carry out extra patrols in the area of a derelict Shandon mansion amid reports of people wandering in and around the building.

MoD Police constable Willie Lavery told Rhu and Shandon community council that both the MDP and Police Scotland would be paying extra attention to the area around Shandon House.

PC Lavery also told community councillors that work had been carried out to remove rubbish from the area around the building on June 7 and 8.

Built in 1849, the B-listed building, owned by the MoD, was last used as a residential school by the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Glasgow between 1965 and 1986, but has lain empty and increasingly derelict since then.

It is now classified as 'high risk' in the Scotland's Buildings at Risk register.
