FOR this week's meander down Helensburgh's memory lane, we go back ten years to the day members of the local 'Backchat' youth project took part in a concert at Cambridge University.

Here's how we reported the story on July 19, 2007...

A TEAM of talented Burgh singers were caught on camera when they took centre stage in a recent trip to Cambridge University.

Youngsters from Backchat Youth Project performed alongside St Mary’s Youth Choir in a concert at the world famous university.

The 14-strong Backchat choir – selected through a series of X-Factor style auditions – made such an impression on their audience that the Cambridge University media team decided to feature them in a film for the university website.

Soloist Shauna McKeller, aged 13, said: “It was nerve wracking being in front of the camera, especially because we were taken by surprise, but we all really enjoyed it and would definitely do it again.”

Their silver screen debut included interviews with the group, a Robert Burns ballad, a gospel song and a High School Musical number complete with a Hip-Hop dance interlude performed by 16-year-old Colleen Berrie.

Activities included tours of the city and colleges, an evening at the university observatories, a trip to Greater St Mary’s Tower, a ghost walk, punting in the back waters and shopping at Cambridge market before they travelled to London for an exclusive tour of the Houses of Parliament.

They were shown the ropes by former Hermitage Academy pupil Kerr McKendrick, who is assistant to the Chief Whip.
