A COUPLE living in a Helensburgh care home have been celebrating 60 years of marriage - at the same time the Advertiser was celebrating its own 60th anniversary.

George and Lilias Lawson, who have been resident at Northwood House care home for just over a year, celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary on August 30.

The pair enjoyed a lunch out at the Commodore Hotel with their daughter Moira and two of the care staff. George made the most of the celebrations with a beer and Lilias had a glass of wine to toast the special occasion. When asked what the secret to a happy marriage was, George replied: “To add a wee bit of salt and pepper to the the mix to keep it interesting – and to pick a good wife.”

George and Lilias said they felt “very fortunate” to be able to still stay together when they had to move to Northwood, and are thankful they can still enjoy Moira’s visits for Sunday lunch every week like they did at home.

Annette Gillis, manager of Northwood House, said: “In this day and age it is extra special to see a couple making it to 60 years of wedded bliss and still obviously so much in love.

“We feel honoured to be able to support them both in continuing to live together and enjoy time together as a couple, and with their daughter, as they did in their own home.”

Another resident of Northwood House, Nancy Bell, celebrated 67 years of marriage on Sunday. Her husband David visits the home regularly and the pair celebrated their anniversary at the care home with the other residents and staff.
