THIS week's trip down the Advertiser's version of Memory Lane takes us back 15 years to the annual gala day in Cardross.

Here's how we reported the event in our issue of September 19, 2002...

ON a sunny September day which outshone much of the summer, Cardross held its annual gala day.

While gala events in Tarbet and Rhu suffered the summer that wasn’t, Cardross enjoyed a scorching day.

Eleven-year-old Laura Simpson and five-year-old Chloe Melvin were gala queen and princess as, after a fancy dress parade, the parade made its way through the village from the Geilston Hall to Cardross church hall. After the royalty was crowned it fell to the Queen for the day to open the event.

Once there villagers enjoyed many attractions including a local visit of Codona’s Yankee Flyer, pony rides, a bouncy pirate ship, dog show and numerous stalls.

Co-ordinator Lynn MacKenzie said: “We had better weather in the middle of September than the original date we had planned.”

Kids enjoyed the bouncy pirate ship while a dog show and pipe band provided fun for all the family.

Traditional fun was on offer with the coconut shy, a giant slide and swings.

For those taking a break from the fun afternoon teas were on offer.

Lynn added: “I’d like to thank the committee members and also the community council who helped out.”
