PEOPLE in Helensburgh and Lomond will pay their respects to those who died in the service of their country at Remembrance commemorations throughout the area this weekend.

Acts of remembrance will take place on Sunday in Helensburgh, Cardross, Rhu, Shandon, Garelochhead, Rosneath, Kilcreggan, Arrochar and Luss.

On Remembrance Sunday, those laying wreaths at the Helensburgh memorial in Hermitage Park will gather at the Victoria Halls at 10am, while those taking part in the parade to the Helensburgh commemoration will muster at Hermitage Primary School in East Argyle Street at 10am and set off from Hermitage Primary School at 10.30am.

Deputy Lieutenant Bobby Steele and Commodore Mark Gayfer RN will take the salute outside the Victoria Halls before the service itself at the memorial at 10.45am, led by the Rev David T. Young of Helensburgh Parish Church.

Councillor Barbara Morgan, who is the armed forces and veterans champion for Argyll and Bute Council, said: “Remembrance Sunday is a day to pay tribute to our lost men and women. They deserve our recognition and our thanks as they have paid the ultimate price, helping us enjoy the country and world we have today.”

Irene White, chairperson of Legion Scotland in Helensburgh, said: “It is great to see so many of the community turn out to remember the fallen. Long may it continue.

"It clearly demonstrates that the remembrance in the local community is absolutely paramount in years going forward.”

Elsewhere in the area, acts of remembrance, led by the Rev Tina Kemp, will take place on Sunday at the war memorials in Rhu at 10.30am and Shandon at 12.30pm.

Youth organisations in Cardross, along with veterans and members of the community council, will be present at a service at the war memorial at 10.45am and will attend Cardross Parish Church thereafter.

Services at Garelochhead Parish Church and St Modan’s Parish Church in Rosneath will begin at 10.45am with a silence at 11am. Rosneath Castle Caravan Park will hold a service at the Cairn at 2pm.

The service at Craigrownie Parish Church in Cove will begin at 9.45am before a parade from the church to the war memorial for the traditional two-minute silence at 11am.

The service in Arrochar Parish Church, which is usually attended by uniformed organisations, will begin at 10am and finish around 10.45am; attendees will then walk to the war memorial at the top of Church Road to observe a period of silence at 11am.

Luss Parish Church’s Remembrance Sunday service will begin at 11.45am and finish around 12.35pm. The service will be followed by a short service at the war memorial at 1pm.

And on Saturday – Armistice Day – the HMS Neptune Volunteer Band is joining with the West of Scotland Military Wives Choir to give a Concert of Remembrance at the Tower Digital Arts Centre at 2.30pm.
