ROSNEATH Primary School is celebrating after P7 pupil Carmen McKell won Argyll and Bute Council’s annual road safety calendar competition.

It’s the first time in the 21-year history of the competition that any pupil at a Helensburgh and Lomond school has been chosen as the overall winner.

Forty-seven schools submitted 1,968 entries, meaning Carmen had to fight off some pretty stiff competition before her design, with the slogan ‘if you see a car coming, don’t start running’, was selected as the winner.

Copies of the council's road safety calendar, featuring Carmen's design, have now been distributed to all schools in Argyll and Bute.

Carmen herself won a beautiful trophy, £50 Amazon voucher, her original poster in a frame, a framed copy of her poster for display in school, and multiple copies of her winning calendar.

Road safety officers June Graham and Kay McGhee from Argyll and Bute Council visited the school to present Carmen with her prizes and to hand certificates to five other ‘highly commended’ Rosneath pupils – the P4 quartet of Hollie Freeburn, Nathan Smith, Tony Jamieson and Lottie Horrocks, and Carmen’s P7 classmate Rebecca McAlpine.

Class teacher Christine Keech said: “Carmen is a gifted wee artist and it was lovely that the whole school got to share in her excitement on the day.

"We have found a suitable spot in school to display our framed copy of Carmen’s winning entry.”

Head teacher Emma McDermid added: “This is a huge achievement for Carmen. She is such a creative pupil and we’re delighted her design will be on display in all the schools in Argyll and Bute.”
