CAMPAIGNERS seeking an early end to Clydelink's contract on the Kilcreggan-Gourock ferry route look likely to be disappointed.

Local MSP Jackie Baillie renewed her appeal to Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT) after the latest suspension of the service.

This was the second time within a two weeks that the MSP has called for the service to be taken over now by Clyde Marine Services.

The Greenock-based company are scheduled to take over the run at the end of July.

But the Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT), which oversees the contract for the route, has ruled out bringing that date forward.

Ms Baillie told the Advertiser: "The ferry service was suspended due to a technical issue despite undergoing intense inspections by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency just days previously.

"This latest incident highlights the need to replace Clydelink as soon as possible to secure a safe and reliable service for local passengers.

Ms Baillie, who fears passenger numbers are falling due to the lack of a reliable service, added: “The ferry service was suspended for around two weeks last month for an intense round of safety inspections so it is disappointing that the ferry is off again so soon due to technical issues.

"We need to secure a safe and reliable service so getting rid of Clydelink should be an urgent priority.

“I have spoken to SPT to reiterate my view that they should be doing everything possible to ensure that the new operator is able to take over the service as soon as possible.

"Passenger numbers are already in decline and we cannot afford to let our local communities suffer until the end of June.

"That, coupled with the news that Clydelink has been reported to the Procurator Fiscal by the Maritime Coastguard Agency, must surely make SPT see the need for urgent action.”

However, SPT ruled out an early switch of operators when asked for a comment by the Advertiser.

A spokesperson said: “The new contract is intended to commence in July 2018.

"The mobilisation of any new contract of this nature is neither immediate or easy where a significant number of logistics and regulatory activities are required.

"We are in discussion with Clydelink regarding the current service performance.”
