A popular Helensburgh restaurant which was badly damaged in a fire two years ago has continued to go from strength to strength by winning another major award.

Annaya's Indian in West Princes Street, which had to shut for six months after a blaze caused by an electrical fault, won Outstanding Indian Restaurant of the Year 2018 at the Scottish Curry Awards in Glasgow on Monday night.

The award is another accolade for the 40-seat restaurant which first tasted success at the prestigious ceremony last year, when it won ‘Restaurant of the Year’ for the South West, along with a runner's up prize for 'Team of the Year'.

The team from Annaya's Indian were jubilant when the award was announced at the glitzy event in the Crowne Plaza Hotel and were quick to post news of their success on Facebook.

A picture of staff and their families was accompanied by a message saying: "So far we’ve won Outstanding Indian Restaurant of the Year 2018, a massive thank you to the event organisers and everyone who voted for Team Annaya’s!"

On Tuesday, Zak Haider, a partner in Annaya's Indian which has a staff of five, told the Advertiser everyone connected with the restaurant was delighted with this latest success.

He added: "It is all down to hard work and providing the type of authentic dishes that we know our customers will enjoy.

"We were closed for six months in 2016 by an electrical fault in a display fridge.

"When we reopened we started doing the business properly and things started to improve.

"We changed the menu to provide authentic cooking with the emphasis on north Indian dishes from Punjab and Kashmir.

"The boys in the restaurant are very experienced. It tends to be a congested market, and we have done well to provide something different which is not run of the mill.

"If we find a good recipe we work on it and taste it ourselves to ensure it is suitable for the western palate."

Zak thanked the restaurant customers for their support and praised the dedication and passion of the staff.

He added: "We made the change after the fire. We knew what we wanted to do and we have been proved right."

Masala Twist in James Street was a finalist for Restaurant of the Year in the south west region but was unsuccessful.

"Throughout the last ten years, we have admired the tenacity of the curry industry despite the numerous challenges.

"The Scottish Curry Awards is one of the few times when the industry’s establishments and individuals are recognised and we’d like to congratulate all of this year’s nominees and winners.”
