People in Rhu and Shandon are under starters orders for a fun-filled, action-packed ‘alternative’ race night to raise funds for this year’s gala.

Rather than traditional horses, the eight races – to be shown on a large screen – will include snails, toy cars and donkeys, to name but a few.

Those attending will have the opportunity to buy and name ‘horses’ at just £3 each, with bottles of Prosecco, kindly donated by Jonathan Trayte and Sophie Handley, on offer for the owners of each winning entrants.

In addition, racegoers can place their bets at just 50p per bet, with the proceeds for each race being divided between winning ticket holders and the Rhu and Shandon gala.

Tickets to enter the race night cost £3 and are available from Minuteman Press on John Street in Helensburgh, as well as the Rhu Inn.

‘Horses’ can also be bought at these locations.

Gordon Black, chair of the gala committee, said: “We are really looking forward to hosting this race night to raise money for this year’s gala.

“It promises to be a highly entertaining evening and will enable us to ensure that this year’s gala is the biggest and best yet. “

“I would encourage everyone to put this date in their diaries now and follow our Facebook page for further information and updates.”

Local businesses are being encouraged to sponsor and name the races and to contribute prizes for the main gala raffle.

Anyone wanting to know more about sponsorship should get in touch by email on rhu.gala@outlook.com or message the committee via the Gala Facebook page at www.facebook.com/Rhu-Shandon-Gala-1469394096623480.

The race night will take place on May 5 at Rhu and Shandon Community Centre from 8pm until late.
