The thrills and spills of an age-old navy tradition will be demonstrated in Helensburgh this week.

HMS Neptune’s field gun crew are set to wow spectators on Tuesday by showing their expertise at dismantling and reassembling an antique field gun.

The team will hold a public demonstration in the car park at Helensburgh swimming pool on Tuesday, May 22, with the main event at 5.30pm.

The event is being held in preparation for the Brickwood Field Gun competition at HMS Collingwood in Hampshire on June 2 and will give the local team the opportunity to showcase their skills.

The free event will see the 18-strong team of serving personnel run, dismantle, reassemble and fire the field gun in as quick a time as possible, re-enacting the moment in 1899 when the Naval Brigade went to the aid of the Army during the second Boer War.

Also attending will be the West of Scotland Military Wives Choir, the Royal Navy bomb disposal experts from Northern Diving Group who will be running a display, the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service's Helensburgh crew, and the Royal Navy's submarine recruitment team.
