HELENSBURGH Garelochside Rotary Club handed a cheque for £700 to two Hermitage Academy pupils on Monday evening.

The money, £500 from the club and an additional £200 from a private citizen, will help fund a trip to Peru by a group of pupils in June.

The cheque was presented by President Bob Kerr and Rotarian John Lafferty to Jennifer Findlay and Kate Smith.

The club was approached by Jennifer some time ago seeking individual sponsorship, as each pupil had to raise £3,000 to pay for their trip; it was agreed that as well as helping Jennifer the club would also donate £500 to the cause.

In return the pupils agreed to help Rotarians with various projects and during a recent house-to-house collection in aid of Polio Plus pupils presented a letter from Rotary authorising their taking part and explaining why they were doing so. One local person was so impressed that they donated an additional £200.

The pupils will spend a month in Peru.
