THE Helensburgh Heroes Centre is to host a debate marking 90 years of women’s suffrage later this month.

Participants in the ‘Are We Equal?’ debate will include Argyll and Bute’s MP, Brendan O’Hara, and his SNP colleague Alison Thewliss, MP for Glasgow Central and winner of the ‘Best Scot at Westminster’ prize at the 2018 Scottish Politician of the Year awards.

The debate, part of the UK-wide ‘EqualiTeas’ initiative, developed by the Houses of Parliament as part of its education and engagement service, will be held at the Helensburgh Heroes Centre in Sinclair Street on Friday, June 22, in memory of Eunice Guthrie Murray.

Eunice, who was born in Cardross, spent many years campaigning for voting equality between men and women, and is one of the many local achievers honoured at the Helensburgh Heroes Centre in Sinclair Street.

Commenting, Mr O’Hara said: “This is an excellent opportunity to bring the community together to discuss the importance of equality, to celebrate the sacrifice and dedication of the women’s suffrage movement and honour the memories and legacy of remarkable activists, like Eunice, who fought to shape history.

“It’s only fitting that the Helensburgh Heroes mark this event given the local connections Eunice has to the town, originating from Cardross.”

Helensburgh Heroes’ Phil Worms addeded: “Given Eunice’s achievements and her connections with the area, we felt it appropriate that Helensburgh Heroes host an EqualiTea event and we are both delighted and grateful that Alison and Brendan have agreed to join us.”

Free tickets are now available for the ‘Following in Eunice’s Footsteps’ EqualiTea event and are available in person from the Heroes Centre, or online via the Helensburgh Heroes website – helensburghheroes.com – and Facebook page.
