This week's Throwback Thursday takes a look at the opening of the new Hermitage Academy building in June 2008.

History was made in Helensburgh last week when the new Hermitage Academy building was officially declared open.

Provost Billy Petrie, himself a former pupil, unveiled a commemorative plaque at a ceremony in what is Argyll and Bute’s largest school, with a current roll of 1,400 and a staff of more than 150.

The Provost, wearing the same “Helensburgh” chain of office that was worn at the first Hermitage School opening in 1880, said he was honoured to have been invited to perform the opening, not only in his role as Provost of Argyll and Bute but also on a personal level.

Four generations of his family, including himself, have been pupils at the school. His grand-daughter, April. McBride, is currently a pupil.

He said: “My wife Jean and I also joined the school on the same day and on the very first morning sat next to each other.” The day’s ceremony took place in two parts — one in the afternoon for pupils, and a dedication evening was held later before an audience.
