COMMUNITY councillors are urging council chiefs to take stock of the risk of flooding at Helensburgh’s proposed new swimming pool.

Vice-convener of Helensburgh and Lomond Community Council, Peter Brown, has warned that storm damage could cause havoc with the potential new building.

Mr Brown said: “We recommended that the building be moved to the location identified by the community in the previous public consultation, as per the 2012 masterplan addendum.

“As well as improving the sustainability of the building, less money would have to be spent on building new defences at the end of the pierhead.”

A completed Flood Risk Assessment, which would determine whether the location of the centre can be changed, was still being awaited.

Mr Brown added: “The community council is concerned that the lack of contingency in Argyll and Bute Council’s timeline will mean that area committee will not be given all the possible options for improving the proposal.”

A council spokesperson said: “The special meeting of the Helensburgh and Lomond Area Committee was re-scheduled precisely so that officers and councillors could have extra time to examine and consider the more than 1,300 responses to the pre planning public consultation.”
