Today's Archive Hour takes a look at our story about pupils being marooned on a desert island.

**********

Youngsters at Cardross Primary were marooned for the day on a desert island.

The children had to navigate shark infested waters to reach their island, then work in groups to perfect their survival skills.

The event marked the end of a two-month Castaway project which covered all aspects of the school curriculum, including music, art, creative writing, science and maths.

The topic began when the children received a postcard inviting them on a plane trip to Los Angeles. They then watched the scene from the Tom Hanks movie, Castaway, showing the plane crash which left him marooned.

The children designed their perfect desert island, then worked in groups to built model shelters and came up with their own songs and dances.

They also learned about democracy, electing councillors to oversee the running of their island, and imposing rules and sanctions. The project culminated in a day of fun, games and practical activities. Teachers used a lawn mower to etch the outline of the children’s island on to the school field, then scattered wood and sticks around the grounds.

The pupils spent the day on their island, working in teams to build life-sized shelters with the materials they found. They also had to work together to collect water and keep the camp fire going.
