ARDENCAPLE’S 2002 team battled back from a goal down to beat a touring team from Morristown in Pennsylvania 2-1 at Hermitage Academy on Sunday.

When Caple goalkeeper Peden dropped a deep cross at the back post, allowing the Morristown centre-forward to score from six yards, the home team feared a long day ahead.

But Peden made up for his earlier error when he rescued Ardencaple with a full length save to turn the ball around the post as Morristown kept pushing forward.

Charlton should have levelled the scores with a back-post header from six yards, but his effort was just too high.

But Caple dictated the play from the start of the second half, with Robb and Mallett causing havoc – Robb seemed certain to score after wriggling past three defenders in the Morristown box, but with only the keeper to beat from six yards he chose the wrong option and the chance was lost.

And the home side finally equalised when Mallett and Robb combined to set up Welsh, whose sweet strike flew into the net.

Having levelled matters, Caple wasted no time in taking the lead, Charlton netting what would turn out to be the winner from six yards after more good work from Robb.

Peden blocked bravely at the visiting centre-forward’s feet before he produced a superb flying save in the closing seconds, tipping the ball over the bar to keep Caple’s advantage intact.

Meanwhile, Ardencaple are looking for players to add to their 2010s squad. Anyone interested should contact Euan Birss on 0795 442 0778.
