AN AMBER weather warning has been put in place for Helensburgh and Lomond, and much of central Scotland, as the country braces itself for the effects of Storm Ali.

The Met Office warning, which was upgraded from yellow to amber on Tuesday morning, is in effect from 8am until 5pm on Wednesday, September 19.

Inland gusts of 65-75mph have been forecast, and could be accompanied by heavy squally showers.

The forecaster has warned that flying debris is "likely and could lead to injuries or danger to life".

They've also advised that there will "probably" be some damage to buildings, such as tiles being blown from roofs or through falling trees and branches.

The Met Office also says disruption and cancellation is likely to road, rail, air and ferry services, and that there's a possibility of power cuts, outages to mobile phone coverage, and that some roads and bridges are likely to close.

In addition, large waves could affect roads, properties and public spaces in coastal areas.
