FOR this week's stroll down memory lane, we wind the clock back 15 years to our story of the unearthing of a time capsule in the grounds of the old Hermitage Academy.

Here's our story of the time capsule's recovery - as published in the Advertiser on April 11, 2002...

INQUISITIVE Hermitage Academy pupils went digging around their school grounds and found something they hoped they would never see again - the dreaded belt.

Lindsey Theobald and John Paulus discovered that a time capsule had been buried at the school 27 years ago to mark the handover of the school to the then newly formed Strathclyde Regional Council.

They approached the guidance principal for Glenan House, John Urquhart, who helped them gain permission to have it dug up as part of Helensburgh’s bicentenary celebrations.

Among their finds were newspapers, including a Helensburgh Advertiser from May 16 1975, various magazines such as the TV Times, a number of school jotters and reference books and, scarily for the pupils, a ‘Lochgelly’ belt.

Mr Urquhart, who had just started working at the school when the capsule was buried, said: “The item arousing the most interest with some pupils was, perhaps predictably, the amazingly well preserved ‘Lochgelly’ belt.

“The youngsters will no doubt be glad to hear that the belt was well and truly buried back in 1975 and this one is unlikely to see active service again!”

To mark the discovery there will be a reception at Hermitage Academy on Thursday April 25 at 3pm and anyone who was on the school staff at the time or any former pupils who remember contributing to the capsule will be more than welcome.
