A HELENSBURGH self-help group’s petition to the Scottish Parliament lobbying for better support for people dependent on anti-depressants has received more than 50 expressions of support.

Marion Brown’s petition, on behalf of the Recovery and Renewal support groups, closed on Wednesday and will now be considered by Holyrood’s public petitions committee.

Ms Brown, a psychotherapist, has carried out extensive research on the effect such drugs can have on people taking them, and has written several reports for medical journals on the subject.

The petition has received the backing of the Westminster all-party parliamentary group for prescribed drug dependence.

The British Medical Association has called for more guidance on the use of anti-depressants amid concerns that they are prescribed too freely by GPs.
