THE average price of a house in Argyll and Bute fell slightly in May, according to new figures.

The UK government's House Price Index (HPI) for Scotland reported that the average property price in the area in May 2017 was £131,892, compared to £133,144 12 months previously – a decline of 0.9 per cent.

The latest figures make Argyll and Bute one of only five local authority areas in Scotland where the average price of a house fell year-on-year.

The steepest declines were in the Western Isles and Shetland – 18 per cent and 14.7 per cent respectively – while the mainland council area with the biggest fall was Aberdeen City.

A short distance from Helensburgh, in neighbouring West Dunbartonshire, prices showed a slight year-on-year increase of 0.1 per cent – though the average price in the latter area, £95,230, is the second-cheapest of any mainland council area, higher only than East Ayrshire.

Across Scotland, average prices rose by 3.5 per cent in May to £138,256.
