HELENSBURGH'S volunteer lifeboat crew went to the aid of two stricken yachts in separate incidents in the Firth of Clyde on Sunday evening.

The RNLI crew was paged at 5.45pm after the crew of a six-metre yacht contacted the coastguard to seek help after running aground on the Cockle Bank, off Port Glasgow, while on passage from Rhu to Dumbarton.

The crew quickly located and refloated the grounded yacht before towing it to the James Watt Dock in Greenock, where it was confirmed that no damage had been done to the vessel's hull.

As the lifeboat crew were returning to their base in Rhu, they were asked to go to the aid of a yacht which was adrift between Rothesay and Wemyss Bay, with no engine power and no wind.

Standing in for the Largs lifeboat, which was on another callout at the time, the Helensburgh crew reached the drifting yacht just before 7pm.

Having discovered the yacht was under tow from another pleasure vessel, the lifeboat crew took over the tow and took the yacht to a berth at Kip Marina in Inverkip.

The Helensburgh lifeboat crew was back at base and ready for service at 8.30pm.
