Helensburgh Music Society is delighted to welcome back the Tim Kliphuis Trio for the first concert of its 2017-18 winter series this Saturday, October 21.

The Tim Kliphuis Trio - comprising Tim himself on violin, Nigel Clark on guitar and Roy Percy on bass, will present their 10th anniversary concert programme at the society’s new venue, the Tower Digital Arts Centre.

This festive programme features the Trio’s greatest successes: music by Ellington, Fauré, Paganini, R. Strauss, Grappelli and Kliphuis himself.

They will also present a selection from ‘Reflecting the Seasons’ from their Vivaldi Album - a dazzling array of colours which will take the listener by surprise.

Classically trained and widely regarded as Stéphane Grappelli’s heir, Tim Kliphuis is a highly personal and inspiring performer, composer and educator, hailed as “a contemporary improvising Paganini”.

He has shared the stage with legends Frankie Gavin, Richard Galliano and Les Paul, and has been lauded for his musical genius by Nigel Kennedy.

Tim was awarded the Scottish Jazz Award (International), has collaborated with the Richard Strauss Festival and Netherlands Chamber Orchestra and is the curator of the Fifty Fiddles Festival, in Rotterdam’s De Doelen concert hall.

He has a busy international schedule including work with The Netherlands and Tallin Chamber Orchestras and The Hague Philharmonic.

He is an in-demand educator at competitions, masterclasses and conservatoires and is the author of the best-selling book “Gypsy Jazz Violin”.

Nigel Clark is an awe-inspiring guitar virtuoso with a unique sound, and has worked with the biggest names in jazz, folk and rock including Gloria Gaynor, with whom he worked on BBC TV as a musical director and guitarist, Moya Brennan, Jan Akkerman, Philip Catherine, Carla Bley, Steve Swallow and Scottish hit band Hue and Cry, who he joined in the late 1980s.

Nigel’s first recording as a band leader, Worldwide Sound, featured some of the UK’s top instrumentalists, including pianist Brian Kellock, saxophonist Tim Garland, Ewen Vernal on bass and Mike Bradley on drums, and in 2012 he recorded his first album of solo guitar arrangements, ‘Under The Stars’.

Roy Percy’s bass sound is rooted in New Orleans and jump-jive, bringing the Trio raw street rhythms and infectious grooves.

He has worked with top Americans Duke Heitger, Marty Grosz, Bob Barnard and Evan Christopher, and backed has many visiting international jazz musicians at the Edinburgh Jazz Festival.

His unique bass slapping techniques, unrivalled in Europe, and his subtle dynamic feel make for a great range of emotions.

Single tickets for this Saturday’s concert, which starts at 7.30pm, cost £12, with students £5 and under-18s £1, and are available in advance from the Tower’s box office on (01436) 820369 or on the door.
