A PUPIL at Hermitage Academy in Helensburgh has had her work published as part of the Scottish Book Trust's annual campaign to get Scotland writing.

Primary and secondary pupils across the country were invited to create a piece of personal writing inspired by the 2017 theme for Book Week Scotland, Nourish.

The Scottish Book Trust (SBT) received thousands of poems that evoked school dinners, family gatherings and favourite treats and and stories on food that nourished both the body and soul.

SBT have pulled together seven of their favourites, including S2 pupil Sonja Raeburn's for this year’s e-book, for others to enjoy.

Miss Kelsey Jubin, SBT Schools Outreach Coordinator said: “Sonja submitted a fantastic story ‘My Own Open Quesadilla’ to our Nourish Book Week Scotland writing campaign.

"Book Week Scotland took place from Monday, November 27 to Sunday, December 3. My colleagues at Scottish Book Trust and I have loved reading the many entries submitted from pupils and young people across the country.

"We were tasked with selecting our favourites for inclusion in a special Nourish e-book for schools which will feature on our website along with the other highlights of this year’s Book Week Scotland activities.

"It was a pleasure letting Sonja and her family know that her story has been chosen to include in our schools e-book!”

Sonja, said: “I am humbled that my writing got published because I do not write a lot. So when I got the announcement from the Scottish Book Trust it was a great surprise.

“This exercise helps me focus, too. This is my surprise gift to my parents this year.”

Sonja attends the local Girls Brigade every Friday evening at Helensburgh Parish Church and is helping to promote a project with the Girls Brigade and SBT.

The monthly 50 words fiction competition is running and the theme for this month is "Winter Lights".

Everyone is invited to enter the competition at Word Fiction Competition at scottishbooktrust.com/reading/the-50-word-fiction-competition.

A spokeswoman for SBT said: "Many thanks to all schools and pupils who participated in the campaign. If stories be the food of life, write on!"
