A MOVING speech by her former headmaster was a major part of a successful book launch for Helensburgh author Suzy Johnston.

The 30 year-old former Lomond School pupil has just had her first book, The Naked Bird Watcher, published to critical acclaim.

An official book launch and signing at a busy Borders in Glasgow last Thursday attracted people from all walks of life.

Suzy said: “It went very well. I was very preoccupied beforehand as I was so nervous, but I was delighted that so many people came and showed an interest.

“People from organisations associated with mental health were there, but there were also a lot of members of the public which was really encouraging.”

Two chapters of the book were read out after Lomond School head teacher Angus MacDonald gave an introductory speech.

Eyes were welling up in the crowd as Angus spoke of Suzy’s time as a school pupil, and why she deserved the acclaim she has received.

He said later: “She was a great kid, a real star at school, and it could only take someone of her character to achieve what she has.

“She always was an outstanding youngster at school with huge potential, and it is a significant achievement to educate people about mental illness in such a positive way. On top of that, the book is simply a really good read.”
