Argyll and Bute Council have come under fire after litter and traffic concerns following the recent sunny bank holiday weather.

Local residents and businesses complained about traffic management in Luss as cars were parked up on pavements, causing congestion and delays of up to 45 minutes as only one car could pass at a time.

Lottie Colquhoun, from Luss Estates, said: “May Bank Holiday weekend was blessed with some beautiful weather.

However, the parking and traffic in the village of Luss was horrendous.

“There was no evidence of traffic management by Argyll & Bute Council.

“They continue to be blind to the issues faced by Luss, and the need to keep visitors’ cars out of the heart of the village.”

Fortunately, litter was not an issue in Luss with Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National park emptying the bins and cleaning the toilets.

Lottie added: “Luss Estates carries out regular litter picks through the peak season.

“The first pick of the season was held recently and 29 sacks of litter were collected in and around Luss by Luss Estates.”

However, it was an issue in Helensburgh as hundreds of visitors flocked to the beach to enjoy the good weather.

A local resident took to Twitter to share her disgust.

Janice Bell tweeted a picture of a bin which was overflowing with litter and had a pile of litter beside it with the caption “@argyllandbute Helensburgh seafront – typical sunny day at the seaside! Explain…”

An Argyll and Bute Council spokesperson said: “We provide a large number of litter bins in the town and we are grateful that residents and visitors use them. “When the weather is nice and the town is busier than normal, bins can fill up fast.

“They are emptied at least twice a day, including at weekends and bank holidays”, they added.

“When they are full, we would ask people to do the right thing and please take their litter away with them, rather than leave it alongside full bins.”
