DESIGNER sunglasses valued at £4,000 were stolen in a smash and grab at a Helensburgh optician on Tuesday night.

And now staff at Occuleye on Sinclair Street are appealing for local folk to look out for anyone selling 'bargain' designer sunglasses around the pubs or streets.

Occuleye manager Hazel Wilson said: 'We had an attempted break-in at about 4am on Saturday morning when the door glass was smashed but they must have legged it when the alarm went off.

'This time though they must have had a much bigger tool and they must have wellied the door panel, climbed in, swept everything into a bag and run off.

'The alarm went off about 2.10am and I was here till 5am when someone came to fix the window.'

She continued: 'Both times there has been shattered glass everywhere, right through the shop and it takes a lot of clearing up. It"s just disgraceful.'

Hazel has warned all the other town opticians to move their valuable stock well away from the window and she has alerted Pub Watch to keep an eye open for anyone selling sunglasses.

The sunglasses stolen included designs by Prada, Gucci and Versace.

Hazel added: 'I would like to think that anyone being offered bargain sunglasses would report it.'

Police inquiries are continuing.
