Arrochar and Tarbet crowned Scottish Village of the Year

ARROCHAR and Tarbet residents are today celebrating after scooping a national award.

The Scottish Village of the Year competition, sponsored by Calor, saw judges arrive in the village last week when the community showcased their area in a bid to beat off stiff competition from the Isle of Eigg and Forth.

A £3,000 celebratory bash will be held on September 26 to reward the community for their hard work and many achievements.

Frank Gunning, president of The Association of Scottish Community Councils and a panel judge, said Arrochar and Tarbet truly showed the determination and community spirit required to make the best out of rural living.

"The community had a great atmosphere and you could tell everyone involved really cares about the future of this spectacular village.

"Well done to them, it's a fantastic achievement!"

Rev Dane Sherrard said he got a shock when he answered the phone call from the judges the morning of the announcement.

"The whole village has really started pulling together and it's exciting. I suspect that played a large part in swinging the decision our way; even in the presentation everyone mucked in and did their bit."
