Transport Scotland has been urged to do more to minimise the disruption motorists are facing on the A82 after a week of horrendous delays.

Vital maintenance work being carried out on the Erskine Bridge until the end of the month has seen the southbound on-slip from the west-bound A82 closed, forcing drivers to divert down to the Dunglass roundabout.

This has created a significant bottleneck in Dumbarton and has resulted in misery for commuters - including those from Helensburgh and Lomond - going to and from Glasgow.

Now Jackie Baillie MSP has again contacted Transport Scotland expressing her concern that the works would be carried out during peak periods including the September weekend. She had asked for the maintenance to be carried out at night to minimise disruption.

Jackie spoke after being contacted by several constituents who had been caught up in tail-backs.

Jackie said: "This week has proven to be a nightmare for commuters. Monday saw traffic at a standstill that stretched from the on-slip at the Erskine Bridge back to Dumbarton Police station.

"Before the works began I had expressed concern that the maintenance would be during heavily congested peak times of traffic. I understand that the work is vital but surely some consideration should have been given to carrying it out during the night, to minimise disruption.

"I have been contacted by several constituents who have informed me that an alternative route to Glasgow via Drymen will be congested after roadwork's begin in Croftamie this week. Therefore, both roads out to Glasgow will be subject to severe delays which are neither practical nor safe for motorists.

"I would call on Transport Scotland to revise their plans for the coming weeks, which include the September Weekend. People must be given the opportunity to travel to and from their workplaces and homes without facing hours of delay."
