POLICE have taken 90 litres of alcohol out of the hands of underage street drinkers in a 12-week booze blitz in the Helensburgh area.
The campaign to remove the alcohol from underage drinkers was one strand of the multi-agency Helensburgh Youth Alcohol Initiative that ran over the summer months and successfully limited the opportunities for young people to illegally gain access to alcohol.
Members of the Youth Alcohol Initiative included Street Links, Argyll and Bute Licensing Board, Hermitage Academy, Community Wardens as well as ACHA and Dunbritton Housing.
Action has also been taken against licensed premises involved in the illegal supply of alcohol to young people.
Some of those young people who may be at risk from alcohol abuse have also been offered assistance and have been encouraged to become involved in locally ran diversionary activities.
Commenting on the booze haul, communities sergeant John Blair said: "Local people in Helensburgh have told us that addressing street drinking, disorder and antisocial behaviour are some of their top priorities in terms of what they want police to tackle.
"There is quite clearly a causal effect between underage drinking and violent disorderly behaviour."
