A SHADOW lies over a Helensburgh sports and recreation organisation this week as investigations into its future viability begin.

Doubts about the future of the Kirkmichael Sports and Recreation Association (KSRA) have emerged and with them questions over the future of the all-weather pitch at Kirkmichael.

And it is understood that the whole issue will come under scrutiny as an urgent item at the business meeting of the Helensburgh and Lomond Area Committee in the next couple of weeks.

The Advertiser understands that the Dunbritton Housing Association, which gifted the all-weather facility to the community in a trade-off for the erection of new homes on the site of the old community facilities in Kirkmichael, has recently had to pick up the tab for the insurance for the pitch.

There are suggestions too of a number of other unpaid bills which are being studied by Argyll and Bute Council officials who are drawing up a report for members.

The pitch was handed over to KSRA around a year ago and with the help of community development organisation Street Links the committee was able to secure funding for a sports development officer for a year and were also given support and training in the management of the facility.

The aim was to make the facility self funding with fees for hire going towards maintenance, operating costs and for any future repairs.

However, the contract for sports development officer Stuart Maule has run out and not been renewed and Stuart has moved on to temporary contracts with the council while the situation is investigated.

It is hoped that the contract might be renewed later this month but our sources report that this is now looking less and less likely without some form of intervention.
