THE Dorian Choir have commissioned a new piece of music based on a book compiled by a Helensburgh mother after the loss of her son.
The composer, Lucinda Ross, was chosen by the choir's conductor to create a piece that they hope listeners will enjoy.
A young Scottish composer, she has recently completed her initial studies in composition and made the trip to Helensburgh recently to hear how the piece is coming together during a rehearsal by the Dorian Choir.
Patrick Trust, president of the choir, explained how the project came about.
He said: "We applied to the BBC as our conductor Marjory Burns thought a new commission would be a good idea to progress the choir's expertise and have a new challenge!
"After checking that the choir was behind the idea I applied for a BBC choral ambition grant."
He added: "I wanted to maintain a local idea for the work and we used a book of short poems and prose compiled by Mary-Jane Selwood, who has sung with the choir in the past and lives in Helensburgh."
The book is entitled 'On the Edge of Silence, A Mountain Anthology' and is dedicated to her son, Mark, who was a doctor and loved climbing mountains during his spare time.
It is a collection of poems related to mountains and features one from a former pupil of Lomond School, Jennifer Hamill, who was just eight-years-old at the time of publication.
The world premiere of the work is set to be held on May 8 at the Victoria Hall.
