THE first winner of Helensburgh's Our Town Lotto burst into tears when she realised the winning ticket was hers.

Emma White, who lives in Cardross and works at Helensburgh Medical Centre, was the first £1,000 top prize winner in the new local lottery.

This week she said: "When I saw my ticket number in the Advertiser at first I was totally overwhelmed and had a wee cry."

But now that the realisation has set in and she has been presented with her cheque by Lotto founder Colin Stewart, Emma is planing to spend her windfall on driving lessons.

She bought her ticket at Ardardan Farm Shop right at the beginning of the first month of ticket sales and was presented with her winnings on Sunday.

She said: "It is very exciting and absolutely brilliant.

"This is a huge amount of money for me and it is money I never dreamt of having so I will be using it for my driving lessons and not put it into my account where it would just be frittered away.

"I had been taking lessons but couldn't afford to carry on with them so I just can't wait to get back to them and hopefully pass my test.

"It will make such a big difference to be able to drive to work."

Emma's partner David, however, is keen that his beloved partner spends all of the winnings on herself.

Emma added: "He has been wonderful and has insisted that I spend all the money on me and not on him.

"I might just treat him to something nice anyway, maybe a weekend away."

The lucky winner bought the ticket never expecting to win and she commented: "I just thought it was such a good idea and it didn't matter if I didn't win anything because at least the money was staying locally and would help local groups.

"I would urge everyone to buy tickets for that reason and even though I have already won the first prize I will continue to buy my ticket every month."
