Helensburgh woman Margaret Gardiner has been ruled out of the Loch Lomond bones investigation.

Bone fragments were found near Tarbet Pier last month, and police believe they belong to a woman aged 35 or over.

Margaret, pictured, was killed at her Helensburgh home on Sinclair Drive in 2004 but her body was never found.

Her husband, ex-Royal Navy man John Gardiner, 58, was jailed for 12 years after he was found guilty of culpable homicide.

A passer-by made the gruesome discovery at Tarbet after noticing the bones sticking out of the water at the pier.

A Strathclyde Police spokesman said: "Further tests and enquiries will continue in an effort to try and establish who the person is."

Tests have also concluded that the bones are not of missing Edinburgh woman Suzanne Pilley.

The 38-year-old vanished on her way to work in the city centre in May 2010 and a major search of the Argyll Forest was carried out but her body was never found.
