Shops battle for the Burgh
Sainsbury's became the latest major retailer to announce its interest in Helensburgh.
The supermarket giant wants to create a mixed use development which could include a foodstore, petrol station and office accommodation.
The latest revelation comes just one week after the Advertiser revealed ASDA's interest in opening a new store in town - also on the pier.
A Sainsbury's spokesman said its investment would bring more than 250 jobs to Helensburgh's town centre.
He has confirmed the chain's willingness to work with Argyll and Bute Council to deliver a new swimming pool for the town on the pier.
Paul Miller, Sainsbury's national development surveyor for Scotland, said: "We believe that we can offer a real partnership that will provide a once in a lifetime boost to Helensburgh's town centre, keeping local people shopping locally and to help realise the council's vision for town centre regeneration. It can also help deliver the much debated new swimming pool."
Sainsbury's will undertake a public consultation exercise before lodging a planning application with the council.
