British Transport Police (BTP) is appealing for information after a 19-year-old woman was assaulted by two men, between 10.15pm and 10.30pm on April 6.

The woman was approached by two men on board the 10.13pm service from Edinburgh Waverley to the burgh.

Words were exchanged before the victim was grabbed and punched by one of the men and spat on by another whilst the train was travelling through the area of Uphall, West Lothian.

Although very shaken, the victim was not badly and injured did not require medical treatment.

Detective Constable David McAllister, the BTP officer in charge of the enquiry, is appealing for information.

He said: “This was a completely unprovoked attacked on a defenceless woman and I am anxious to speak with anyone who was on the train and witnessed it to come forward.” Both suspects are described as being about 40 years of age and heavy build. One of them had brown hair and was wearing a purple checked shirt and jeans. The other man was wearing a maroon jacket and blue jeans. Both of them spoke with Glasgow accents.
