STV’s On Weir’s Way with David Hayman will see the Glaswegian actor follow in the footsteps of pioneering hillwalker and conservationist Tom Weir.

Weir, who was born in Springburn, is forever associated with Loch Lomond through his cult hit show Weir’s Way which was broadcast from 1976-1987.

This December will be Weir’s centenary, and to mark the occasion Hayman will exploring much of the same natural landscape and meeting many of the same characters Weir did in his original show.

Over the course of the past two years, the Tom Weir Statue Campaign has pushed for a statue to be erected in honour of Weir, who died in 2006 at the age of 91.

Susan Taylor, one of the campaign administrators, said they are now within sight of their funding target of £50,000 and the new show will hopefully help the group reach its goal.

Susan told Advertiser Outdoors: “It’s definitely going to raise awareness of the campaign.

“I’m really looking forward to the end of the year, it’s going to be a big push from now until December and we’re currently sitting at around £30,000, so need another £20,000 more.

“We have asked STV if they’ll put up something mentioning the campaign at the end of the credits so hopefully that will give us the boost we need.” And on the subject of whether the show will translate with today’s audience, Susan says she has no doubt. She added: “I think with somebody like David Hayman involved, the younger audience will take to it especially with how popular health kicks and being active are now with younger people.

“I honestly believe it will be very popular and it will be really interesting to see how the places have changed since the original programmes.” On Weir’s Way with David Hayman will air later in the year and is currently being filmed in locations across Scotland including various locations throughout Loch Lomond.
