Aisling Naughton, 18, is one of 15 young people who recently started the company’s Modern Apprenticeship in Customer Service.

The 18-month programme includes a mixture of classroom and workplace learning, with apprentices having the opportunity to apply for a full-time job with the train operator upon successful completion.

The programme – a UK rail industry first – is designed to provide each apprentice with personal development training and the opportunity to achieve a Level Two Scottish Vocational Qualification in Customer Service, as well as a Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s award.

The former Hermitage Academy pupil is following in the footsteps of her brother after he completed ScotRail’s Modern Apprenticeship as a member of its first intake in 2010.

She said: “My brother told me how great the experience was and what it helped him to achieve.

“After he took part, we could see the difference it made, as he was much more outgoing and focused.

“I’m hoping it can do the same for me and I’m really looking forward to the experience.” Each apprentice will be given placements in four key frontline customer service roles – station booking office, gateline, ticket examiner, and on-train hospitality host. They will also spend time at ScotRail’s Training Academy in Glasgow.

Aisling added: “I love meeting new people and the scheme will let me do that, as well as giving me the opportunity to work as part of a team to serve the public, which is something I enjoy.” Julie McComasky, human resources director at ScotRail, said: “We are pleased to welcome our third intake of modern apprentices since we started the programme in 2010. During that time, we have seen the benefits it delivers to those taking part, both in terms of personal development and their employment prospects.

“We have also successfully recruited many of our modern apprentices as full-time members of staff.”
