In checking for underwater obstructions, he came across an object sticking out of the mud beside the Maid. This turned out to be an original 1953 wooden bench seat from the ship.
John Beveridge, Director of the charity, is delighted at the find. He said: “We had no idea it was there as it must have been 'lost’ over the side before we took ownership of the Maid in 1995.
“This was an unexpected find, but we are always desperate for original fixtures or fittings from the Maid to be returned like the ship’s wheel, chairs, or cutlery, so we can make a feature of them for visitors to see.” The seat was hauled up from the loch bed and brought aboard the Maid. It is in good condition and will be repaired and restored by the Maid’s volunteers over the winter. It is being stored in the Mickel Saloon for safekeeping until then.
