Elizabeth Bellshaw, was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2004, but her cancer came back last year.

But the big-hearted 58-year-old wanted to give something back to the cancer unit, and together with her family she organised a fund raising night in the Three Villages Hall.

On Friday, the family gathered at the Oncology unit to hand over their cheque for £7,917 — thought to be one of the biggest fundraising donation given to the unit – to doctor Gerry O’Hare.

The night took place in April, and £2,500 was raised at the event, which featured live music from The Menu as well as a raffle and tombola.

Elizabeth’s parents Alistair and Stella Campbell joined them on the night and were proud of the how much money was raised.

But a few weeks later, Stella had a stroke and died, and at her funeral £587 was raised to boost the total even further.

Elizabeth’s sister, May Hamilton, told the Advertiser: “When my sister found out about her secondary breast cancer she wanted to give something back and it was my daughter Lindsay’s idea for the fund raising night.

“We set out with a target of £3,000 and we can’t believe how generous everyone has been, to raise nearly £8,000 is amazing. We are Arrochar girls born and bread, and everyone supported and help us raise the money.

“Sadly two weeks after the event, my mum passed away. She was so proud of what we had done.

“It was a lot of hard work but we wanted to support our sister and this great cause.” Neice Stephanie also took the plunge and raised £1,600 by doing a skydive in Perth in May.

The family also auctioned off football tops and other gifts on Facebook and raised £1,000 to put towards the total, and workers at Faslane completed the Father’s Day 10k in Glasgow and donated money to the fund.

A spokeswoman for NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde said: “We are always very grateful for any donations to the unit. It is especially touching when families take the trouble to fundraise. Their efforts will go towards helping other families.

“Their efforts are very generous and we are very grateful.”
