The Healthy Futures initiative was set up 11 weeks ago and the young carers completed the programme last week with help from Chris Bowman Fitness and NHS Highland.

It was funded through a grant by Carers Trust, and linked eight youngsters with experts of fitness, healthy eating and mental health.

The reason behind the project is because research by Carers Trust Scotland showed that young carers have less opportunity to exercise because of their caring role and that they are unsure about how to make their diets healthier and are also more likely to suffer from poor mental health.

The group took part in 10 fitness session with qualified personal coach Chris Bowman, five healthy eating and cooking workshops, two positive mental health workshop and an information session with the lead school nurse from NHS Highland about what health resources are available locally.

Young carer Rebecca, said: “Taking part in Healthy Futures has made me realise I enjoy exercise and plan on keeping up my fitness and cooking the healthy meals we made each week with Amanda. Big thanks to Chris for putting us through our paces.” And Sharon Richardson, acting development co-ordinator, added: “Some of the young carers we support frequently discuss the issue of poor body image with us, which can lead to feelings of insecurity and low self-worth.

“This 11-week programme helped them embark on a healthier lifestyle that incorporates physical exercise, healthy eating and positive mental health.” Meanwhile Helensburgh and Lomond Carers took part in Carers Rights Day, to provide information and advice to residents who may one day become a carer.

The day is about releasing a new research report showing that 10.6 million people will become carers in the next five years, taking on an unpaid caring role for relatives or friends.

And making sure they get the information and advice they need at the right time is vital.

As part of the day the charity launched a range of information resources to help carers find out about their rights and where to get help and support. Councillors and welfare rights officers attended giving advice and guideance to carers in Helensburgh and Lomond.
