Gaelic singer Ainsley Hamill and fiddler Ryan Young will individually compete for the title, which will be contested as part of this year’s Celtic Connections festival in Glasgow.

The young musicians were selected as two of six finalists for the award. The winner will have the opportunity to launch a career a traditional music with help from BBC Radio Scotland.

The awards, which close Glasgow’s Celtic Connections festival, will be available to listen to live from the City Halls in Glasgow on February 1 on BBC Radio Scotland between 5pm and 7pm and on BBC iPlayer.

Hamill will also appear at the festival as lead singer of Scottish folk band Barluath, who will perform at Oran Mor in Glasgow on January 30. Barluath will share the stage with Danish husband and wife duo Helene Blum and Harald Haugaard at the event, one of 300 events taking place at Celtic Connections from the January 15 to February 1 2015.
