Hayley Henderson, who lives in Ardencaple, actively posts information on her Facebook page, which she said has led to mothers from the other side of the world taking her advice.

The 21-year-old, who has an 18 month old son, said she began to research car seats when she found out she was pregnant, and the results for her were 'terrifying'.

She said: “Since being pregnant, I was researching the best car seats, it’s not the law here to have rear-facing seats, although the research shows they are safer.

“A lot of people don’t know about it - they might think that if shops sell front-facing car seats then they must be safe.

“Rear facing seats are more expensive and harder to find. For me, expense did not matter, as I wanted my son to be the safest he could be.” The young mum has tried to get more information on how to implement laws to have rear-facing seats compulsory for young babies. In Sweden, children must be in rear-facing seats until the age of four, as it is deemed much safer.

Hayley said: “I’m not the most confident person, so it’s a bit tricky for me to get my message across.

“I contacted MSP Jackie Baillie to find out what can be done to make it a law to have rear-facing seats compulsory.” Her ideas have influenced other mums around the globe, thanks to social media.

She said: “I joined a group on Facebook when I was pregnant, and there were mums-to-be from all over the world sharing ideas. Everyone was talking about what seats they were going to get.

“On my own Facebook I share things, but I just want to raise awareness, it is personal choice though - I don’t want to force ideas down people’s throats, I just want to let people know their options.

“I am not judging other mums, but maybe there is someone who doesn’t know.

“It is raising awareness for people that don’t know.

“From the things I share on Facebook, I think I have made a bit of a difference.

“I was contacted by a woman from Australia who said that after reading the posts I shared that, she changed her car seat for her child.

“There’s another woman who lives in this area who is having her fifth child, because of all the posts on my Facebook page she is getting a rear-facing car seat for her baby. Her other children all had front-facing chairs.

“If babies are safer, that is the main aim.”
