FAMOUS Paddle Steamer the Waverley’s chief executive was named Social Entrepreneur of the Year at an awards ceremony in Glasgow last week.
The Enterprise Awards recognised Kathleen O’Neill as an individual who has shown initiative, been innovative, and worked hard towards the success of the Waverley.
Ms O’Neill has worked for the Waverley Charity for 17 years and she has a great affection for the ship. She believes that the ship can offer a lot more than it’s esteemed heritage and social history – such as providing an economic impact, education, employment, and training.
Operating a 70 year old Paddle Steamer – which was deemed uneconomical 40 years ago – is not an easy task and Ms O’Neill was praised for meeting the challenges ‘head-on’.
This year, 2015 the Waverley celebrated her 40th year sailing in preservation.
Waverley’s summer sailing season starts on June 20 and the ship sails on the Clyde until August 30.
