At a recent fundraiser for the Craigrownie Park Group, Glasgow-man John Turnbull gave £1000 for a prize which is to be gifted to a local child.

One lucky child, to be selected from Kilcreggan Primary School, will now be given the opportunity to accompany a Scotland football player onto the pitch for the European Cup qualifier against Poland in October, after the prize was donated by the Scottish Football Association.

The child will also be given a Scotland strip, a goodie bag, signed photo and will get to stick around to watch the match on October 8.

Stewart Regan, chief executive of the SFA, was in attendance at the curry night in Cove Burgh Hall recently.

The Craigrownie Park Committee were keen for a local child to benefit from the prize, and opened a community bid - asking for £10 donations.

Mrs Frances Bretman, headteacher of Kilcreggan Primary School, was there and received the prize so after the summer holidays one lucky child from the primary will have an 'experience of a lifetime’.

More than 100 people were at the fundraiser on Thursday, with Annaya’s Indian restaurant from Helensburgh serving up a feast.

Overall the evening raised £3000.

Roni Ferguson, spokeswoman for the group, told the Advertiser the night had been a roaring success.

She said: “The fundraiser went as well as we had hoped - we raised more than we had expected.

“Annaya’s were great - and really accommodating. What was really nice was that it was a cross-community event, we had people from the whole community there, which was really nice to see.” The group have now raised just under £70,000 towards their £100,000 total to restore a park in the peninsula.

Plans for future fundraisers to secure money for the park include a dinner dance and auction, currently scheduled for August.

Organisers are hoping to source top prizes - and they currently have a Glasgow Warriors shirt, signed by players and a signed Scotland football top.
