A highlight of the exhibition at Helensburgh Library – which organisers say generated ‘considerable local interest’ – was the participation of senior schools in an art competition funded by the trust.

Pupils from Hermitage Academy and Lomond School submitted their own pictures on local themes to complement those illustrated in paintings from the collection. Trustees agreed the collection would benefit from acquiring or two of the pictures from the schools competition. After some deliberation of the high standard of entries, two pictures were selected including Inchmurrin Hen, a Linoprint by Lomond School pupil Isla Scott, 17; and The Hill House, a mixed media painting by Hermitage Academy pupil Nathan Walker, 14.

Mary Jane Selwood, a trustee of the Anderson Trust, said: “The trustees are grateful to Isla and Nathan for kindly donating their pictures to the Anderson Trust permanent collection. Neither of these pupils is considering a career in art but both show talent and an evident interest in this field which we hope will enrich their lives whatever course they pursue. This sentiment and, indeed, this whole venture of collaboration with local schools correspond closely with the wishes of Nance Anderson, the originator of the collection, who was always generous in her support for young people and schools in the town.”
