Nan and Jack Hughes marked their diamond wedding anniversary after marrying 60 years ago on August 26, 1955 at St Joseph’s Church in Helensburgh.

The pair first met when they went to the cinema, and now they have three children, and are proud grandparents to four grandchildren.

Daughter Barbara Carter told the Advertiser: “They met at the LA Scala picture house when they both went to see a film with a friend. They started talking and that was that.” Nan, 81, used to work in the Hosiery shop in Princess Street, continuing to work part-time for most of her life.

Barbara said: “She played a very important part in the looking after her grandchildren, she was the saviour of her eldest son Alan when he and his wife Fiona had twins.

“When grannie and grampa arrived at their house Alan and Fiona would hand the twins over and sleep. When Helena was very young I had to go away one week a month to work, mum would fly to London, hire a car and take over, allowing me to completely focus on my job without any worry whatsoever.” Jack, 80, worked as a projects manager for construction companies. Barbara added: “When his children were young he worked seven days a week so that we could have a wonderful childhood, with everything we wanted.” The couple will be going on a Mediterranean cruise to celebrate their anniversary Their grandchildren presented them with a special Hughes whisky, and two commemorative glasses.
