Ms Baillie visited Cumberland Avenue, meeting with the Helensburgh Community Woodlands Group (HCWG) – who have campaigned to clear up a site there after woodland was felled in 2011.

Felled trees have lain at the site for around four years, and the group started a petition earlier this year in a bid to get the former woodland cleared up. The petition, signed by 308 individuals, was handed to the Argyll and Bute Council in April.

As a result, the council served formal notices on the landowners in June requiring them to remove the pile of logs and the nearest pile of debris. The notice did not cover all the piles of debris left on the land, which has caused frustration for the group and residents nearby. The landowners have now appealed to the Scottish government, and a decision on their appeals is expected by mid-October.

HCWG has submitted representations to urge the Scottish government to uphold the notices and insist that the owners must tidy up the site.

Several individual residents living in the vicinity of the site have also submitted their own representations.

Ms Baillie said: “I was delighted to meet with members of Helensburgh Community Woodlands Group as part of my summer roving surgeries to offer my support for their representations to the Scottish government.

“Local residents deserve credit for their relentless campaigning but it is regrettable that they have been forced to go to such lengths, lobbying local and central government, to have the site cleared. I hope that this brings us one step closer to transforming the site, which has become a derelict eyesore, into a space the whole community can enjoy.” David Adams, convener of the HCWG, told the Advertiser: “We’re delighted to have Jackie Baillie’s continued support for our campaign at Cumberland Avenue along with that of our local councillors across the political spectrum. We’re very glad Jackie made the time to meet local residents at the site and hear their concerns about its continued neglect.” The landowners did not respond to the Advertiser.
