There were great results across the board for the school as it reported a 10 per cent increase in the amount of As awarded at higher level.

One pupil was highlighted for their particularly outstanding success in achieving eight As in her National 5 exams.

Grace Girling told the Advertiser: “I really had to work hard to get all A’s and being awarded an Academic Tie feels like a great achievement.

“My family and teachers are really pleased for me – all the support and help I received last year has really paid off.” The school awarded academic ties to pupils in S5 and S6 to recognise top achievements in this years’ SQA examinations.

Around 44 per cent of last years’ senior 4 pupils were presented with a silver academic tie for attaining six or more grade A’s in their National 5 exams while over 80 per cent of Lomond pupils attained six or more National 5 awards in S4.

Around 32 per cent of pupils achieved a gold academic tie for four or more Highers at Grade A. Pre-appeal, Lomond’s Higher passes were also up eight per cent on 2014 while 42 per cent of the cohort attained five Highers or more and A grade awards increased by 10 per cent on last year.

Almost all of Lomond’s leavers were successful in their applications to further and higher education institutions.

The academic ties are presented at a special assembly and worn as part of the recipient’s uniform, as well as being a keepsake of their time at school.

Mr Dodson, head of careers and future destinations at Lomond said: “Five good passes at Higher is the ‘gold standard’ entry to the top universities in Scotland.

“However, university entry is becoming more and more competitive, and universities will sometimes look at pupils’ S4 results when trying to differentiate between pupils with the same excellent grades.” Johanna Urquhart, Lomond School principal, said: “We were absolutely thrilled that one in five of our S5 pupils attained five Grade As at Higher.

“We find that our curriculum allows our pupils to keep a broad range of subjects that interest them for longer before they then go on to specialise in S5. “The National 5 examinations are great preparation for the vital final years at school.

“This is most definitely a policy that works for our young people since 100 per cent of our university applications were successful this year.

“Our Advanced Higher A grades have increased by 12 per cent this year which demonstrates the value and rigour of our sixth form experience: pupils can build on their academic success whilst also being supported to make that crucial transition towards further studies and the world of work.”
