HELENSBURGH Swimming Pool and Gym will be closed from Monday for nine months.

The pool is closing for essential operational and health and safety works designed to safeguard the pool's operation over the next few years against the risk of permanent closure and a number of alternative options have been put together for pool and gym users.

Councillor George Freeman, Chairman of Argyll and Bute Council's Helensburgh and Lomond Area Committee said: "Following the feedback we've received from our customers and local community groups, the Council has made a commitment to upgrade Helensburgh Pool to ensure that the residents of Helensburgh and Lomond have the facilities that they deserve.

"I am very much looking forward to the reopening of our new and improved pool and am very confident that the short; and longer term improvements to be made to our leisure facilities in Helensburgh will be of great benefit to our residents. In the meantime, we would like to thank the members and customers of Helensburgh Pool for their patience and support in this matter."

Members of the swimming pool have the option of freezing their membership until the pool reopens. Alternative arrangements have been made at other facilities in the area and members can transfer their membership to these facilities at a very competitive rate.

Any members who decide to freeze their membership will be able to use the facilities within the refurbished pool free of charge for the first month after it reopens and membership costs will stay at this year's price for the first six months. It is anticipated that the pool will reopen in July 2010.

The options for members who wish to transfer to another facility are given in full in this week's Advertiser
