THE restoration of the Burgh's only A-listed church, which has been taking place for the last decade, is nearing completion.

Designed by distinguished architect, Sir Robert Rowan Anderson, St Michael's and All Angels Church, has undergone a massive restoration programme spanning almost 10 years.

At an original estimated cost of £750,000, raising the money was a huge task.

But thanks to the generosity of so many, including Historic Scotland, Heritage Lottery Fund, Episcopal Church congregation, Scottish Church's Architectural Heritage Trust and seven other smaller trusts - plus a lot of hard work from the church's own fundraising committee - the money was found.

Under the guidance of architects Simpson and Brown and the chosen contractor, Hunter and Clark, the vital work was undertaken. Simpson and Brown, founded in 1977, are award-winning architects based in Leith.

The company has been recognised by the Royal Institute of British Architects, and membership of this prestigious scheme is regarded as a mark of excellence in the industry.

James Simpson said: "Now, in the age of sustainability, the assumption that old buildings should be replaced with new ones has all but disappeared. Conservation and sustainability is at the heart of what Simpson and Brown do."

The work which included masonry, roof and stained glass repairs was grant aided by Historic Scotland and completed over three phases.
